Kane Williamson is back in green. The MPL legend — second on the all-time runs list — returns to the Warthogs for MPL 12, slotting straight into the top order as the club mounts its defence of the MPL 11 title.
It's a statement signing, and one we didn't expect to land this early at the Auction. With a number of key players unavailable this season, securing a batter of Williamson's calibre to anchor the order changes the conversation about who's favourite this year.
He's no stranger to the dressing room. Williamson wore the colours in MPL 02 and MPL 05 — and was one of the leading run scorers in both campaigns. This is a returning Warthog, not an outsider.
Why This Signing
The brief was simple: find a batter to lead the top order through a season where the squad sheet looks thinner than usual. The Warthogs got more than that.
Williamson brings runs, but he also brings the things that don't show up on a scorecard — experience, calm under pressure, and the kind of presence that lifts the players around him. Expect him to slot in alongside captain Neil Lane as a senior voice in the side.
The Track Record
In his last stint at the club, Williamson didn't go a single innings under 20 across an entire MPL 02 season — and stitched together three half-centuries in a row through the middle of that campaign. Standout knocks include 71 off 49 against the Conquering Crabs and 68 off 44 against the Rabid Rabbits — both match-shaping innings.
He sits second on the all-time MPL run-scorers list. That's the kind of CV you build a top order around.

Coach Rajin Saleh has worked with Williamson before, and made it clear this was a player the club had earmarked. "He's played an extremely vital role in the past for our club. We are thrilled to have him back on board, for what is obviously going to be a very challenging and exciting season as we attempt to be back-to-back champions. We expect Kane to contribute in a major way to this side, especially with his batting ability and experience at the top of the order."
Williamson, for his part, kept it short. "I'm grateful to be back with the Warthogs side. They have obviously shared in some great success in recent times, and I'm very excited to help play a role in trying to go back to back."
